Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman sought Japan’s continued support for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar during a meeting with Japanese lawmakers in Tokyo on October 26, UNB reported.
The delegation, led by former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso, represented the Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship League. The meeting took place at the Imperial Hotel, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin.
The Rohingya crisis featured alongside discussions on Japanese investment, bilateral trade, technology transfer and skills development.
Rahman also invited Aso and members of the parliamentary friendship league to visit Bangladesh.
The account did not specify what action Bangladesh asked Japan to take on repatriation or report a new Japanese commitment. It provided no timetable for return or details of arrangements to protect refugees’ safety and rights in Myanmar.
Rahman arrived in Tokyo on October 26 for a four-day official visit.
