Dhaka — October 19, 2026. Bangladesh has sought international support for the safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, while the UN special envoy urged the country to continue supporting them until repatriation becomes possible.
The exchange took place during a meeting between State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M. Iqbal Hossain and a visiting delegation led by UN Special Envoy on Myanmar Julie Bishop at the Secretariat in Dhaka on October 19, BSS reported.
According to the news agency, Bishop thanked Bangladesh for providing shelter to Rohingya refugees over a prolonged period and urged it to maintain its supportive approach until their return.
Hossain appealed for greater international assistance with repatriation. He said hosting a large refugee population had placed pressure on the environment and socioeconomic development in the affected areas.
BSS reported that Bishop pledged assistance for the Rohingya, but did not specify any new funding or programme.
The report provided no timetable for repatriation or details of measures to ensure refugees could return safely and with dignity.
