Rubio Speaks with Dr Yunus on Reforms, Elections, Rohingya, and Trade

Dhaka, 1 July 2025 | U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a 15-minute phone call with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday evening, where the two discussed a range of key issues, including democratic reforms, trade, elections, and support for Rohingya refugees.

The call, which began at 7:30 PM, was described by Bangladesh’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam as “warm and constructive,” underscoring the strong bilateral relationship between the United States and Bangladesh.

According to official sources, Secretary Rubio expressed support for Bangladesh’s reform agenda and welcomed its preparations to hold national elections in early 2026. Dr Yunus confirmed that the government is engaging in ongoing dialogue with political parties to enact electoral reforms, while the Election Commission is working to rebuild trust in the electoral system.

“Our young people will vote for the first time in their lives,” Dr Yunus said during the call.

On trade, both leaders expressed hope for the conclusion of ongoing negotiations on tariff adjustments aimed at boosting bilateral commerce. The U.S. remains Bangladesh’s largest export destination and a key source of remittances. Dr Yunus thanked President Trump for suspending reciprocal tariff measures for 90 days, and said that efforts are underway to finalize a long-term trade package.

The discussion also addressed U.S. humanitarian support for Rohingya refugees, which Dr Yunus described as “generous and vital since 2017.” He noted that prospects for Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar are gradually improving, and emphasized Bangladesh’s continued commitment to seeking a voluntary, safe, and dignified return process for displaced Rohingya.

The two leaders also touched on regional security and Bangladesh’s diplomatic ties with neighboring countries. Dr Yunus extended a formal invitation to Secretary Rubio to visit Bangladesh before the upcoming election, to observe firsthand the country’s democratic efforts and ongoing reforms.
