Dhaka, 10 September 2026: Bangladesh will organise a high-level event on the Rohingya crisis during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to take part in the event and address the Rohingya crisis, according to the foreign minister.
The event is expected to focus on the continuing displacement of Rohingya refugees and the need for stronger international cooperation towards a lasting solution, including safe, voluntary and sustainable return to Myanmar.
Bangladesh has been seeking greater international pressure and engagement on the crisis as large-scale repatriation remains stalled.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam had earlier confirmed that a Rohingya-focused session would be held during this year’s UN General Assembly and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would attend.
The 81st session of the General Assembly opened on 8 September under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
Khalilur said Bangladesh would continue working with partner countries, donors and international organisations to keep the Rohingya issue high on the global agenda.
He reiterated Bangladesh’s position that the root of the crisis lies in Myanmar and that any durable solution must ultimately address conditions there.
No specific date, list of participating countries or new repatriation mechanism was announced for the Rohingya event.
