A 25-year-old Rohingya man was found dead after reportedly being missing for several days in Camp 15 of the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps, leaving his family and the community in shock.
The victim, Abdul Hafiz, was the son of Nuruz Juhar and lived in Block H-8 of Camp 15. His body was later recovered from a toilet pit in the same block. The cause of his death has not been officially confirmed.
According to his family, Abdul Hafiz was abducted by unidentified individuals who demanded money in exchange for his release.
“Our son was kidnapped. We paid BDT 380,000 after the kidnappers demanded a ransom, hoping he would be returned safely. Instead, we later found him dead,” a family member said.
Some local residents have offered a different account, alleging that Abdul Hafiz had links to an armed group and may have been killed by members of a rival armed group. Rohingya Khobor has not independently verified these claims, and no official authority has confirmed them.
“People in the area are discussing different versions of what happened, but until there is an official investigation, no one can say with certainty how he died or who was responsible,” a community member said.
At the time of publication, authorities had not released any official findings on the case or announced any arrests.
The incident has heightened concerns about security inside the refugee camps, where cases of abduction, extortion, and violent crime have remained a persistent concern.
Community members have called for a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding Abdul Hafiz’s death, identify those responsible, and ensure accountability.
