Fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army has continued for a second week along the Sittwe-Ponnagyun front, with new airstrikes reported around Ponnagyun as ground clashes remain active.
The current round of fighting began on September 4 along the border between Sittwe and Ponnagyun townships.
Local and military sources cited by Arakan-based media reported continued clashes in areas including Wabo, Yae Yoe Pyin, Sa Pot Taung and Kuntaung, as Myanmar military forces attempted to advance from positions around Sittwe.
On September 17, Myanmar military aircraft reportedly carried out intensive airstrikes around Kuntaung and nearby areas in Ponnagyun Township.
Development Media Group reported that four fighter jets conducted repeated bombing runs beginning at around 9:50 a.m., while a Y-12 aircraft was also reportedly involved in the attacks.
The reported airstrikes have not been independently verified by Rohingya Khobor.
Fighting has also continued around positions near Min Chaung Bridge and the Shwe Min Gan naval base, with artillery, drones and aircraft reported in use.
Separate reports on September 18 said Arakan Army forces had captured several Myanmar military outposts on the Sittwe side of the front. Those battlefield claims could not be independently confirmed.
There were no independently verified casualty figures from the latest clashes at the time of reporting.
Earlier fighting along the Sittwe-Ponnagyun axis forced thousands of civilians from nearby villages to flee, according to local reporting. Continued artillery fire and airstrikes are raising further risks for civilians remaining near the frontline.
The Myanmar military has not publicly provided a detailed account of its current operations in the area, while the Arakan Army has also not released independently verifiable casualty figures for the latest fighting.
