A four-year-old Rohingya boy was found dead inside a sack in Jamtoli refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, after going missing for two days. Police have arrested a couple on suspicion of involvement in his abduction and killing.
The child, identified as Mohammed Omair, went missing from Camp 15 on October 8, according to reports citing the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
His father, Abdul Hamid, alleged that a ransom of Tk 50,000 was demanded for the boy’s release.
Police recovered Omair’s body at around 10:30 pm on Saturday, October 10, from a tin-fenced area near a rubbish tank in the camp.
The body had been concealed inside a sack, according to police accounts reported by local media.
The 8th Armed Police Battalion arrested Abdur Rahman and his wife, Ansar Begum, in connection with the suspected kidnapping and killing.
According to police, investigators detained Abdur Rahman after receiving information about the alleged ransom demand. Officers later located the child’s body during their investigation.
Police said they initially suspected that Omair had been strangled, although the precise cause of death remained subject to further examination.
The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, and police said legal proceedings were underway.
The circumstances of the child’s death and the suspects’ alleged involvement remain under investigation.
The killing has raised serious concerns about the safety of children in Rohingya refugee camps, where families continue to face threats from criminal activity and insecurity.
