An easy guide for Rohingya communities in refugee camps, Rakhine State and around the world.
Radio remains an important source of news and information for Rohingya communities, particularly in refugee camps where internet access may be limited or expensive.
Kaladan Radio, operated by Kaladan Press Network (KPN), can be accessed online using a mobile phone. Listeners may also be able to receive its shortwave broadcasts using a suitable radio receiver.

How to listen on your mobile:
- Turn on your mobile data or connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Chrome or another internet browser.
- Visit https://kaladanradio.com/.
- Find the radio programme or live listening option.
- Tap Play, if available, and adjust your phone’s volume.
If the station is not broadcasting live, check for previously recorded programmes.
2. Listen to KPN on Shortwave Radio
The reported KPN shortwave broadcast schedule is:
- Days: Monday to Friday
- Myanmar time: 7:40–7:50 pm
- Reported frequency: 17,720 kHz (17.72 MHz)
- Mode: AM (shortwave)
Note: The shortwave frequency and schedule require confirmation from KPN before relying on them. Published frequency listings have also identified another programme on 17,720 kHz.
A shortwave radio receiver covering 17.72 MHz is required to listen without the internet.
3. Can You Listen Using Your Mobile Phone’s FM Radio?
Some mobile phones have a built-in FM radio application that works without internet access.
To use it:
- Open the FM Radio application on your phone.
- Connect wired earphones if your phone requires them as an antenna.
- Search for available local FM stations.
- Select a station you want to hear.
Important: An ordinary FM radio cannot receive KPN’s reported shortwave frequency of 17,720 kHz. You can only hear Kaladan Radio through FM if it also broadcasts on a local FM frequency within reception range.
4. Listen to Shortwave Radio Through the Internet
You can also try the free University of Twente WebSDR.
Open the website, enter 17720 kHz, select AM and enable audio.
However, the receiver is located in the Netherlands, and broadcasts directed towards Myanmar may not be received clearly.
For most mobile listeners, Kaladan Radio’s own website or Mixlr page is a simpler option.
