Japan and Bangladesh have called for dialogue involving Rohingya and other affected groups to address Myanmar’s worsening crisis, while reaffirming support for voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return.
The position was set out in a joint statement following talks between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Tokyo on October 27.
The leaders called for an immediate end to violence, the release of detained people and conditions allowing humanitarian assistance to reach those in need. They expressed concern about displacement, including of Rohingya, and the crisis’s regional consequences.
Takaichi acknowledged Bangladesh’s sheltering of Rohingya refugees and expressed support for continued humanitarian assistance.
Both leaders stressed engagement with all parties to promote reconciliation and protect vulnerable people, including Rohingya. Rahman said the crisis originated in Myanmar and its solution lay there.
The statement provided no timetable for return, new funding amount or specific mechanism to ensure refugees’ safety and rights after repatriation.
