Rangamati, 3 September 2026: Nine people were detained during a joint security operation in Longadu, Rangamati, as authorities investigated whether some of them were Rohingya refugees who had left camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The group was detained on 2 September at Mainimukh Market in Longadu.
Longadu Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Swarajit Dey confirmed the detentions and said authorities were verifying the identities and backgrounds of those held before deciding on further legal action.
According to law-enforcement sources cited by local media, a group of 12 people travelled by speedboat from Rangamati to Longadu before arriving at Mainimukh Market. Acting on information, security personnel detained nine members of the group, while three others reportedly left the area.
The nine detainees were identified in local reporting as Mohammad Sabbir, Numair, Shaon, Abdul Hafiz, Nurul Amin, Mohammad Hossain, Tayeb, Sabikun and Tahura.
Media reports differ on how many of the detainees are Rohingya.
Dhaka Post, citing law-enforcement sources, reported that all nine said they had left Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf and identified themselves as Rohingya.
However, several other Bangladeshi outlets reported that five of the detainees identified themselves as Rohingya, while the remaining four claimed to be Bangladeshi citizens.
Police said the identities of the detainees were still being verified.
Authorities are also investigating why the group travelled to Longadu and the identities of three other people who reportedly left the area.
