The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has reaffirmed its support for efforts to facilitate the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Newly elected OIC Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed gave the assurance during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the OIC, Ambassador MJH Jabed, in Jeddah on Wednesday, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
BSS reported that Cheikh Ahmed expressed the OIC’s firm support for efforts toward the “speedy repatriation” of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.
During the meeting, Ambassador Jabed conveyed a congratulatory message from Bangladesh Foreign Minister and President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Dr Khalilur Rahman, to the new OIC chief.
Cheikh Ahmed warned that the prolonged Rohingya crisis could have wider consequences if it remains unresolved, including risks to regional security and further humanitarian suffering.
He reaffirmed the OIC’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at resolving the Rohingya crisis and facilitating the return of refugees.
The discussion also covered wider Bangladesh–OIC cooperation, including education, healthcare, science and technology, hospitality, contract farming and other areas of potential economic cooperation.
Cheikh Ahmed also expressed interest in making an official visit to Bangladesh and highlighted the role of the Islamic University of Technology, an OIC institution based in Bangladesh, in science and technology education across member states.
