KYAUKTAW, Arakan State — 28 September 2026: Rohingya civilians, including children, were among those killed, injured or reported missing after Myanmar military airstrikes struck a busy market and bridge in Kyauktaw Township on Monday afternoon, according to information gathered by a Rohingya Khobor correspondent on the ground.

The strikes took place around midday on 28 September. According to Rohingya Khobor’s correspondent, one bomb struck Gispanadi Bridge, while another hit Gispanadi Thiri Market, locally known as the Indian Market, where large numbers of civilians were buying and selling goods at the time.

Another bomb was also reported to have struck Mrauk-U Township, although the precise location and details of casualties from that strike were not immediately available.

Independent reports also confirmed strikes on the market and adjacent bridge. DVB reported that Myanmar Air Force aircraft struck the “Indian Market” and Kissapanadi Bridge in Kyauktaw Township.

Casualty toll continues to rise

The overall number of casualties remained unclear on Monday evening as information continued to emerge from the affected area.

The Arakan Army said at least 33 people had been killed and 36 injured in the Kyauktaw airstrike. A local aid worker with a team operating in the area separately confirmed those figures to Reuters. Reuters said it could not independently verify all details of the incident.

The Arakan Army also warned that the death toll could increase further. AFP reported the same preliminary toll and said the strike hit a market and adjacent bridge around midday.

However, a separate local source later told Rohingya Khobor that the death toll had risen to at least 41, with 67 people injured, adding that the number of deaths could rise further.

Rohingya Khobor has not yet been able to independently verify the higher figure of 41 deaths and 67 injuries.

Rohingya child dies in hospital

A preliminary Rohingya casualty list compiled by Rohingya Khobor’s correspondent as of 5:00 pm identified one Rohingya child who died in hospital, at least two Rohingya civilians who were injured and 12 others reported missing.

Adu Rahim, 13, daughter of Adu Majid from Paik Thei Muslim Village in Kyauktaw Township, died in hospital after being injured in the airstrike, according to information received by Rohingya Khobor.

Several children were also among those reported missing following the attack.

The following people were reported missing as of 5:00 pm:

  1. La Lu, 12, male, son of Maw Gul, from Paik Thei Muslim Ward, Kyauktaw Township.
  2. Ayas, 16, male, son of Fawri Zulak, from Paik Thei Muslim Ward, Kyauktaw Township.
  3. Saw Bira, 9, female, daughter of Khalil, from Paik Thei Muslim Ward, Kyauktaw Township.

  12. Daw Ma Thein Hla’s grandchild, also from Purain, Mrauk-U Township. The child’s name, age and other details were not immediately available.

At least two Rohingya injured

At least two Rohingya civilians were reported injured:

  1. Mahmat Hussain, 17, son of Maung Maung Hla.
  2. Sayad Karim, 28, male, son of Adu Karim, from Taung Htaung village.

Details about the nature of their injuries and their current medical condition were not immediately available.

Strike hit a busy civilian area

DVB reported that three airstrikes struck the “Indian Market” and the adjacent Kissapanadi Bridge, which spans the Kaladan River and lies on a road connecting Kyauktaw with Mrauk-U, Minbya and Myebon townships.

Myanmar Pressphoto Agency separately reported that aircraft dropped bombs near the bridge and market at around 12:10 pm and 12:14 pm, citing local sources.

Reuters quoted local aid worker Wai Hun Aung as saying that the location was far from active fighting. A Myanmar government spokesperson had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment.

The wider casualty figures include people from different communities and should not be confused with the Rohingya-specific casualty and missing-person list compiled by Rohingya Khobor.

The identities and conditions of some of those reported missing remain under verification, and the casualty figures may change as further information reaches local residents and aid workers.

Rohingya Khobor will continue to update this report as additional verified information becomes available.
