Rohingya leaders called for a clear plan for repatriation and a place in decisions about their future at a demonstration organised by the United Council of Rohingya (UCR) in Camp 15 on Thursday.
The gathering began around noon as world leaders met for the UN General Assembly in New York. UCR President Panel member Ro Khin Maung said the group welcomed Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposals on the Rohingya crisis, but wanted the international community to set out a firm roadmap and Bangladesh to develop a national strategy.
“Nine years is too long,” he said, urging governments and Rohingya representatives to work together. He said Rohingya people should participate in discussions where decisions about their future are made.
President Panel member Sayed Ullah said families had spent nine years in the Cox’s Bazar camps and needed clear decisions about what would happen next. Another panel member, named in the reporter’s notes as Mr Shuab, called for conditions in Myanmar that would allow people to return with security and dignity.
Shanjida, also identified in the reporter’s notes as a President Panel member, thanked Bangladesh for sheltering Rohingya refugees and spoke about the discrimination Rohingya had faced in Arakan State.
