A 40-year-old Rohingya worker died after reportedly receiving an electric shock while repairing a tube well in Camp 6 in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Arof, son of Mohammad Saidullah. He was a resident of Block H-56/A in Camp 18.
According to Rohingya witnesses, Arof worked as a plumber and maintenance worker, repairing water pipelines, tube wells and related facilities in different refugee camps.
Witnesses said he was working on a tube well in Camp 6 around noon on August 9 when he came into contact with electricity and received a severe shock.
He reportedly died at the scene.
Local residents recovered his body and took it to a primary healthcare centre near the Camp-in-Charge office before informing police.
Atikur Rahman Majumder, Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station, confirmed that police were informed of the incident and recovered the body.
Police subsequently prepared an inquest report, according to the officer.
Following a request from the family, the body was handed over to Arof’s relatives under the supervision of the Camp-in-Charge.
No further details were immediately available about how the electrical contact occurred, whether the tube well or nearby electrical equipment had a technical fault, or what safety measures were in place at the worksite.
The incident raises questions about occupational safety for Rohingya workers carrying out maintenance and infrastructure-related work inside the camps, particularly when their duties involve water systems located close to electrical installations.
