A $5 million contribution from South Korea will support food assistance, nutrition services and school meals for more than 462,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the United Nations World Food Programme said on Monday.

The funding was officially announced by South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July, with WFP releasing further details of the assistance on September 21.

According to WFP, the contribution will support vulnerable Rohingya families in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char through food assistance, nutrition programmes and school feeding.

More than 36,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women will receive nutrition support, while around 260,000 children attending learning centres will receive school meals.

The funding will also support the second phase of Responding with Emergency Assistance for Conflict-affected Households, or REACH, a humanitarian initiative of South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs implemented in partnership with WFP.

Rohingya families receiving food assistance through WFP’s e-voucher system are able to purchase food from designated outlets according to their household needs.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women identified as malnourished will receive specialised nutritious food and related support, while children attending learning centres will receive fortified food on school days.

South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Kim Ji-joon said his country remained committed to supporting vulnerable communities affected by humanitarian crises.

WFP Representative and Country Director in Bangladesh Coco Ushiyama said continued international assistance remained important as the Rohingya crisis approached its tenth year.

South Korea and WFP have worked together for more than six decades.

With the latest contribution, South Korea’s cash support to WFP’s humanitarian operations in Bangladesh through the e-voucher programme has reached $11.9 million, according to WFP.

The contribution comes as humanitarian agencies continue to face funding pressure in maintaining food, nutrition and other essential services for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
