Cox’s Bazar, April 29, 2026 — Authorities detained 72 people, including three suspected human traffickers, during operations at the Teknaf border on April 28 following a new group movement from Myanmar.
In two separate operations, 69 Rohingya individuals were detained, including men, women, and children.
In one operation, 11 people were found near the Naf River, including four women and seven children. A wooden boat used to cross the border was seized.
In another operation, 58 people were detained from a village area where they were reportedly hiding. This group included five men, 20 women, and 33 children. Authorities also seized an auto rickshaw and gas cylinders believed to be linked to trafficking activities.
Three suspected traffickers were arrested and are believed to be part of a network facilitating cross border movement in exchange for money.
Local sources said many Rohingya are paying large sums to traffickers to escape violence in Myanmar, with some selling their belongings to make the journey.
Recent reports indicate an increase in such crossings through Teknaf and Ukhiya, often taking place at night using small boats across the Naf River.
The movement is linked to ongoing conflict in Rakhine State, where many Rohingya face violence, fear, and hardship.
More than 1.18 million Rohingya refugees are currently living in camps in Cox’s Bazar, many of them women and children facing difficult conditions.
Residents near the border expressed concern about safety and the impact of new arrivals on local conditions.
The situation continues to place pressure on camps and surrounding communities.
