The UK has pledged to continue its leadership role on Myanmar at the UN Security Council as Bangladesh called for sustained international engagement on a safe, voluntary and dignified Rohingya return.

Dhaka, 31 August 2026: Bangladesh has urged the United Kingdom to maintain its support for international efforts towards the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, during talks between officials of the two countries in Dhaka.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir raised the issue during a meeting with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 30 August.
According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kobir thanked the UK for its continued support for the Rohingya and called on London to maintain its role in international efforts aimed at creating conditions for their return to Myanmar.
Cooke assured him that the United Kingdom would continue its leadership role as the penholder on Myanmar at the UN Security Council and work to keep the Rohingya issue high on the international agenda.
The Rohingya issue formed part of wider discussions on the Bangladesh-UK relationship, including trade and investment, migration and mobility, education, skills development, security and regional and international affairs.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Cooke said the two countries had discussed a broad range of shared priorities, including support for the Rohingya response.
She also congratulated Kobir on his recent appointment and said she looked forward to working with him and the Bangladesh government to deepen bilateral cooperation.
The meeting comes as Bangladesh continues to seek greater international involvement in efforts to find a durable solution for more than one million Rohingya refugees living in the country, while conditions for a safe and sustainable return to their homeland in Arakan State remain unresolved.
