Military recruitment registration has reportedly started again in several Rohingya villages in Maungdaw Township, raising concerns among local families about the future of their children.
According to residents, village administrators have begun collecting the names of Rohingya men and women between the ages of 18 and 30. The registration is being carried out through household records in villages including Paungzar, Hla Baw Zar, Kyauk Hla Ka, and Mingalar Gyi.
Local people said they were instructed to bring their family registration documents to village administration offices, where personal information was recorded. Many residents fear that those listed may later be called for military service.
A Rohingya father from Maungdaw said he worries about the safety of his children.
“Every parent wants to see their children grow up, study, and build a future. When we hear about military recruitment, our hearts become heavy because we do not know what will happen to them.”
Residents also said that some young people who joined armed groups in the past have not been heard from for a long time, leaving families worried and searching for answers.
A Rohingya mother expressed her concern, saying: “We spend every day thinking about our children. If they leave, we may not know where they are or when we will see them again. A mother’s biggest fear is losing contact with her child.”
Many families are now discussing what this development could mean for their sons and daughters. Some residents said young people are considering leaving the area because they are afraid of being recruited.
A young Rohingya resident shared his worries about education and the future.
“We want to continue our studies and find jobs one day. Our dream is not war. Our dream is to learn, work, and support our families.”
Community members say concerns are growing not only about safety but also about education, employment opportunities, and the long-term future of Rohingya youth in Maungdaw.
