Dhaka has urged parliamentarians worldwide to sustain international attention on the Rohingya crisis and support efforts towards an early return to Myanmar.

Dhaka, 1 September 2026: Bangladesh has called for stronger advocacy from parliaments around the world to maintain international attention on the Rohingya crisis and support efforts towards the early repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam made the call on Tuesday during a meeting with Anda Filip, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.
Referring to the Rohingya crisis as creating an “untenable situation,” Islam called for stronger global parliamentary engagement to keep the issue on the international agenda and support an early return of the displaced population, according to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
No new repatriation agreement, timetable or mechanism was announced during the meeting.
The Rohingya issue was discussed as part of broader talks between Bangladesh and the IPU on parliamentary cooperation, democratic institutions, human rights and capacity building.
Filip welcomed initiatives by the current Bangladesh government to strengthen democratic institutions, while Islam expressed interest in expanding cooperation with the IPU through parliamentary exchanges, experience-sharing and capacity-building programmes.
The two sides also discussed digital harassment, misinformation and disinformation, particularly those targeting women and girls.
Bangladesh continues to push for international support for Rohingya repatriation, but large-scale returns to Myanmar have yet to begin amid continuing concerns over security, citizenship, rights and conditions in Arakan State.
