Dhaka, 10 September 2026: Bangladesh will hold talks with China and Myanmar in an effort to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said on Thursday.
Speaking at an international conference titled “Protracted Rohingya Crisis: The Search for a Comprehensive Approach” at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Kobir said only a political solution could end the prolonged displacement of the Rohingya.
He said Bangladesh has provided shelter and protection to more than one million Rohingya since the mass displacement of 2017, despite the pressure the crisis has placed on the country’s economy, environment, public services, local communities and national security.
Kobir said Bangladesh remains committed to the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
He also stressed that Bangladesh did not create the crisis and cannot resolve it alone, calling for stronger international political engagement and shared responsibility.
The state minister said Bangladesh remains cautiously optimistic about resolving the crisis through diplomacy and would intensify engagement at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
He said Dhaka would use its position at the United Nations General Assembly to keep the Rohingya crisis high on the international agenda.
Bangladesh also supports accountability proceedings concerning atrocities against the Rohingya, with Kobir saying that justice and sustainable return should advance together.
The conference was organised by the Department of International Relations at the University of Dhaka in collaboration with the Foreign Service Academy and UNHCR.
No timetable or specific framework for the planned talks with China and Myanmar was announced.
