Two Rohingya volunteer guards were injured in a shooting in Camp 22 on Monday afternoon in what local sources described as an attempted attack on the camp’s Head Majhi, Mohammed Rofiq.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 10 between Blocks B-6 and D-2.
According to camp residents and local sources, Rofiq had gone to the area to oversee repairs to CCTV cameras installed under the direction of the camp administration.
While he was there, a group of armed men allegedly opened fire from a concealed position.
Rofiq told Rohingya Khobor that he believed the attackers were aiming directly at him. He said he lowered his head as the shooting began, and a bullet instead struck Mohammed Hossain, 28, who was standing behind him.
Hossain, a resident of Block A-4, was seriously injured, according to local sources.
A second volunteer guard, Mohammed Rofik, 25, was also reportedly injured while attempting to protect the Head Majhi during the attack.
Both injured men were taken for medical treatment.
Rofiq himself escaped the gunfire but reportedly sustained minor injuries during the panic that followed.
After the shooting, he sought shelter at a nearby Armed Police Battalion post.
“I believe they were trying to shoot me in the head,” Rofiq told Rohingya Khobor. “I lowered my head when they fired, and the bullet hit the person behind me.”
Local sources alleged that the attackers were associated with a group known in the camp as the “Islam Group.” Rohingya Khobor could not independently verify that affiliation, and authorities had not publicly confirmed the identity of the attackers at the time of reporting.
Members of the 8 Armed Police Battalion arrived at the scene after receiving information about the shooting.
A Bangladesh Army team later visited the area and assessed the security situation, according to camp sources.
Roni Alam Noor, Camp-in-Charge of Camp 22, confirmed that a shooting had taken place and that Head Majhi Rofiq was under APBn protection following the incident.
Security patrols were subsequently increased in the area, while law enforcement personnel reportedly launched an operation to identify and arrest those responsible.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Although local sources described the incident as a targeted attempt to kill the Head Majhi, Rohingya Khobor could not independently establish the attackers’ identities, organisational affiliation, or motive.
The incident adds to continuing concerns over armed violence and threats against Rohingya community leaders and volunteers inside the refugee camps.
Authorities have not yet publicly announced any arrests in connection with the attack.
