A Rohingya man identified by authorities as a commander of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Camp 8 West in Ukhiya on Wednesday night.
The victim was identified as Md Zubayer, 34, son of Rahmat Ullah and a resident of Block H-29 in Camp 8 West.
According to officials, Zubayer was walking from his shelter towards a mosque when several armed men opened fire near a house in the Irani Hill Police Camp area. Witnesses reportedly heard several gunshots before the attackers fled the scene.
Camp residents rushed Zubayer to the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital in Camp 8 West, but he reportedly died on the way.
Authorities said preliminary information indicated that the killing might be connected to continuing disputes and violence involving armed groups operating inside the refugee camps. However, the motive has not yet been established, and no group has publicly claimed responsibility.
Police arrived at the scene following the shooting and began an investigation. Officials said efforts were underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
Rohingya Khobor could not independently verify Zubayer’s alleged affiliation or position within ARSA. No arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
