An online discussion on The Gambia v. Myanmar will bring together The Gambia’s lead counsel, a senior Rohingya political advocate and a former senior Bangladeshi military official to examine the genocide case and its implications for accountability and Rohingya rights.
9 September 2026: An online briefing on the landmark genocide case The Gambia v. Myanmar before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will be held on Thursday, 10 September, bringing together legal, Rohingya and Bangladeshi perspectives on the proceedings.
The discussion will feature M. Arsalan Suleman, partner at Foley Hoag and lead counsel for The Gambia in the case against Myanmar; Nurul Islam, Rohingya lawyer and chairman of the Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO); and Lieutenant General (Retd) Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, former Principal Staff Officer of Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Division.
The ICJ held public hearings on the merits of the case from 12 to 29 January 2026 in The Hague. The Gambia filed the case in 2019 under the Genocide Convention, accusing Myanmar of violating its obligations toward the Rohingya.
Suleman is expected to discuss the legal arguments presented before the Court, the next stages of the proceedings and possible implications for accountability and reparations.
Nurul Islam will address the case from a Rohingya perspective, including questions of rights, citizenship, protection and safe return.
Mahfuzur Rahman is expected to provide a Bangladeshi perspective on the Rohingya crisis and the wider security and policy implications for Bangladesh.
The briefing is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Sydney time on Thursday, 10 September, which is 8:00 a.m. in Bangladesh.
