On Monday at around 9:30 pm, the Naikhaungchari police team led by sub-Inspector Mukhlesur Rahman arrested a Rohingya youth with three gold bars at Betbunia Bazar area of Ghumdum union in Naikhaungchari.

Naikhuangchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Alamgir Hossain confirmed the matter on the morning of June 22.

The arrestee has been identified as Mohammad Yunus, 25, son of late Nur Hossain of E-block of Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

The estimated market value of the recovered gold is Tk 29.40 lakh.

Ghumdhum police investigation center in-charge SI Mukhlesur Rahman told the reporter that Rohingya Mohammad Yunus was trying to enter the border and was smuggling gold from Myanmar. On the basis of secret information, the allied forces conducted an operation and searched his body. He said he had been smuggling gold from Myanmar for a long time.

The arrested accused was sent to Bandarban Jail on Tuesday morning after filing a case under the relevant law.

Rohingya youths are lured into illegal and criminal activities due to a lack of educational and human development programs both in the refugee camps and in the Northern Rakhine state. In many cases, they are forced to enter into this dark world for not having any other alternatives.
