On Tuesday around 1:00 am, some 30/40 masked assailants equipped with sharp weapons and firearms attacked a refugee leader and gunned him down at C block of camp-9 in Balukhali 2.
The deceased is Noor Habi, alias Wakkas Rofiq, was a camp leader (Mazee) of camp-9.
The assailants left the scene when other refugees arrived. The neighboring refugees rushed Wakkas to MSF lead Hospital where the on duty doctor declared him dead. After a short while the police came to hospital and sent the body to Cox’s Bazar morgue for autopsy.
The deceased’s family members claim that since Wakkas raised his voice against Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) following the devastating arson in Balukhali camp-11, the ARSA members shot him down to remove the proof of their heinous crime that made 12000 Rohingyas homeless, destroying more than 2000 refugee shelters.
Another refugee from Balukhali camp said under anonymity that the active members of ARSA killed Wakkas because he protested against ARSA given their alleged involvement in the arson. The source continued that they (ARSA members) are targeting those raising their voices against them following the massive destructive blazing.
