Two Grade-12 schoolgirls were injured and more than 10 homes belonging to Hindu families were damaged after an airstrike struck Maungdaw Township in Rakhine State on Wednesday morning, according to local residents.
Residents said a military aircraft reportedly dropped two bombs at around 11:40 a.m. near a creek approximately 120 meters west of the Border Areas Youth Development School, located between Ward 5 and Ward 7 of Maungdaw town.
The explosions shattered windows in several school dormitories and sent shrapnel into the school compound, injuring two students.
The injured students were identified as 18-year-old Hnin Nu Khine and 19-year-old May Myat Noe. Hnin Nu Khine sustained injuries to her left arm and ear, while May Myat Noe suffered a wound to her back.
Residents said heavy rain was falling at the time of the attack, making it difficult to hear the approaching aircraft before the explosions occurred.
The blasts also damaged more than 10 nearby homes belonging to Hindu families. According to residents, roofs were damaged and windows were shattered by the force of the explosions.
“We heard two loud explosions and people started running in every direction,” a Rohingya resident told Rohingya Khobor. “Nobody knows where the next bomb may fall. We are living in fear every day.”
Another resident said that fear has become a part of daily life for civilians living in the area.
“Every time we hear an aircraft, our hearts start racing,” he said. “Children are frightened, and parents do not know how to protect their families if more attacks happen.”
The incident is the latest in a series of reported airstrikes in Rakhine State, where civilians continue to face growing risks amid ongoing armed conflict.
