In a concerning development, tensions have escalated in the Rohingya quarters with the latest incident occurring on January 22, 2024. A heavily armed group, identified as members of the Rakhine community, forcibly entered a Rohingya residence in the Kondan quarter at approximately 1:20 PM. Their intention, as reported, was to commit robbery and intimidate the local Rohingya population. This alarming event unfolded as the armed group opened fire when confronted by the Rohingya residents, fortunately leaving without causing physical harm.

This is not an isolated incident. On December 25, 2023, a similar attempt was made in the Aung Min Galar quarter, where two Rohingya individuals sustained injuries during a confrontation with the Rakhine armed group, identified as the ALP. These attacks have heightened fears among the Rohingya community, comprising around 4,000 individuals residing across five quarters – Aung Min Galar, Mawleek, Kondan, Kathe, and Kyawngyilan.

The Rohingya community has faced severe challenges and restrictions since 2012, struggling to maintain basic living conditions. These recent attacks exacerbate an already dire situation, raising urgent concerns about the safety and security of the Rohingya people. The international community and human rights organizations must pay close attention to these developments and provide necessary support to ensure the protection of vulnerable populations in these regions.
