President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly Dr Khalilur Rahman has described the Rohingya crisis as a “grave human crisis” and said violence cannot provide a solution.
Speaking in an interview with UN News, Rahman said dialogue, negotiation and cooperation were necessary to address prolonged conflicts and humanitarian crises.
“Violence will not solve any problem. It will only make the situation worse,” he said.
Rahman referred to the destruction of Rohingya homes and villages and the mass displacement of the community from Myanmar.
He also spoke about the resilience of Rohingya refugees and their continued desire to return to their homeland.
Rahman recalled UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ visit to Cox’s Bazar, where large numbers of Rohingya refugees gathered during Ramadan and many carried signs saying they wanted to return home.
The remarks come ahead of a high-level side event on the Rohingya crisis scheduled for September 23 during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Office of the UNGA President confirmed that the event will focus on the Rohingya crisis and broader international efforts concerning conditions in Myanmar and refugee-hosting countries.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is also expected to raise the Rohingya issue during his participation in the UN General Assembly.
Bangladesh has continued to call for conditions that would allow Rohingya refugees to return to Myanmar safely, voluntarily, with dignity and on a sustainable basis.
Rahman said the General Assembly provides an important space for governments to engage in diplomacy, including discussions that may not always take place publicly.
The Rohingya crisis remains one of the major humanitarian and political issues facing Bangladesh as international attention and humanitarian funding continue to come under pressure.
