Police have opened an investigation after a 29-year-old IOM engineer died while inspecting work at a health facility in Camp 3 in Ukhiya.
Cox’s Bazar, 24 August 2026: A 29-year-old engineer working with the International Organization for Migration died on Monday after her scarf and hair became caught in a running generator while she was inspecting work at a health facility in Rohingya Camp 3 in Ukhiya.
The deceased was identified as Farhana Haque, a resident of Uttara in Dhaka who was serving as a Senior Field Engineer with IOM.
The accident occurred at around 10:20 a.m. in Block A/11 of Camp 3, according to police.
Farhana had arrived at the IOM-run health facility at around 9:30 a.m. to inspect ongoing work.
Police and local sources said that during the inspection, her scarf became entangled in the generator, followed by her hair, leaving her critically injured.
Medical staff at the facility provided immediate treatment and advised that she be transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
She died while being taken to the hospital, police said.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman confirmed the incident and said Farhana had sustained severe injuries after her scarf and hair became caught in the generator during the inspection.
Her body was taken to the morgue, and police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Authorities are examining how the accident occurred. Local reports said investigators are also looking into the installation and operation of the generator, although no finding of negligence or safety failure has yet been announced.
The death has raised questions about occupational and equipment safety at facilities operating inside the Rohingya camps, where humanitarian staff, local workers and refugees regularly work around generators, construction sites and other machinery.
Any determination over responsibility or whether safety procedures were breached will depend on the findings of the investigation.
