Rohingya refugees and humanitarian workers participated in a series of sports activities in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar to mark World Refugee Day 2026, promoting solidarity, inclusion, and community engagement.

The event, organized by UNHCR in Bangladesh, BRAC, ActionAid Bangladesh, and other humanitarian agencies, brought together refugees and aid workers under the theme of “Sports for Solidarity.”
One of the main attractions of the event was a friendly football match between a team of Rohingya refugees and humanitarian workers. Despite rainy weather, both teams played enthusiastically, with the refugee team securing a 2–0 victory.

Participants said the event offered a rare opportunity to enjoy recreational activities and strengthen connections within the community.
Speaking to Rohingya Khobor, one participant said, “For a few hours, we forgot our hardships and enjoyed playing together as one community.”

Another refugee said, “Sports bring people together. Today, we were not refugees and aid workers—we were simply teammates and friends.”
A young Rohingya spectator expressed hope for the future, saying, “We dream of a future where we can play freely in our homeland, but today this match gave us happiness and hope.”

Organizers said the activities were intended to celebrate the resilience of refugees while fostering mutual understanding and unity between displaced communities and humanitarian workers.
World Refugee Day is observed annually on June 20 to honor refugees worldwide and raise awareness of their rights, challenges, and contributions.
