Bangladeshi law enforcement authorities have arrested a Rohingya refugee in connection with the alleged abduction of another Rohingya man in Camp-19 in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. Authorities said the victim had not been rescued as of Friday, and a search operation was continuing.
According to investigators, the incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on June 25. Police said the arrested suspect, Mohammad Ekram, 32, allegedly lured 30-year-old Jaber Hossain by claiming he needed to provide fingerprints for passport-related procedures before taking him away.
Authorities said the alleged abductors later contacted the victim’s family and demanded BDT 350,000 in exchange for his release. The family subsequently reported the incident to the Camp-19 Police Camp.
Following the complaint, members of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn) launched an operation and arrested Mohammad Ekram. He was later handed over to Ukhiya Police Station for further legal proceedings.
According to law enforcement officials, another Rohingya man identified as Shariful, along with four or five unidentified individuals, is also suspected of involvement in the case. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining suspects and safely recover the victim.
The Commander of the 8th APBn confirmed the arrest and said a special operation remains underway to rescue the abducted man and apprehend everyone allegedly involved in the incident.
