Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) arrested 19 Rohingya refugees while they were fishing outside the refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar on 09, June, according to local authorities.
The arrests took place shortly after midnight in an area known as Rahmat’s Beel, which is located within the patrol area of the Balukhali Border Outpost under the 64 BGB Battalion.
According to BGB, the group was found fishing in a local fish farm during a special patrol operation. The refugees were taken into custody and later handed over to Ukhiya Police Station for further legal action.
Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh face restrictions on movement and employment outside the camps. Many families struggle to find ways to support themselves due to limited opportunities.
One Rohingya refugee said, “Life inside the camp is very difficult. Some people try to find small ways to earn food for their families, even though they know there are risks.”
Another refugee shared, “We cannot move freely or work legally. Many families depend on aid, but sometimes it is not enough to meet all our needs.”
A third refugee said, “People are worried about being arrested, but they are also worried about how they will feed their children. It is a difficult situation for many families.”
BGB officials said they will continue their efforts to maintain law and order in the border area and prevent illegal activities. They also called on local residents not to take advantage of the vulnerable situation of Rohingya refugees by involving them in unlawful work.
Police are currently processing the case, and legal procedures against the 19 detained refugees are underway.
