Bangladesh has called for stronger international cooperation and increased United Nations funding to address the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis, warning that the situation is becoming a growing humanitarian and security challenge for the country.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed made the remarks during a meeting in Dhaka with Carol Flore-Smereczniak.
According to the minister, Bangladesh has continued hosting hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who fled violence and persecution in Myanmar over the years.
He said that although the government and humanitarian organizations are continuing assistance efforts, existing support remains insufficient to meet increasing humanitarian needs.
Salahuddin Ahmed stressed that stronger international cooperation, increased financial assistance, and expanded UN-led funding are necessary to manage both humanitarian conditions and security concerns linked to the prolonged refugee crisis.
The UN official praised Bangladesh for providing shelter and support to Rohingya refugees and said the crisis cannot be handled by Bangladesh alone.
She also emphasized the need for stronger global attention and international action regarding the Rohingya situation.
Officials from the United Nations and the Bangladesh government also attended the meeting, where discussions reportedly included development issues, peacekeeping cooperation, and trade.
