Turkey has once again expressed its support for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.
During a meeting in Dhaka on Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman discussed the Rohingya crisis and ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Hakan Fidan said Turkey continues to work with neighboring countries to find a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis. He also praised Bangladesh for hosting more than one million Rohingya refugees who fled violence in Myanmar.
“We support the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of the Rohingya people to Myanmar,” Fidan said.
Khalilur Rahman said Bangladesh remains committed to promoting peace and prosperity around the world. He added that both countries discussed the possibility of increasing trade and exploring future agreements to strengthen economic ties.
At the end of the meeting, Bangladesh and Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding on the protection of cultural heritage.
The Turkish foreign minister is also scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar to observe the humanitarian situation before concluding his three-day official visit to Bangladesh.
The visit highlights the continued international attention on the Rohingya refugee crisis and the need for a lasting solution that allows refugees to return home safely and with dignity.
